In this video, art teacher Mrs. Rough of the Academies of Math & Science – Desert Sky campus describes the importance of teaching art within the K-8 STEAM curriculum and how it helps broaden the educational experience of scholars.
She is able to integrate art into the core curriculum subjects of math, science, English language arts (ELA) and social studies into their daily studies. For example, she utilizes architectural concepts in art which allows her student to demonstrate their math knowledge into their work.
Further, she introduces the art of typography and cursive to reinforce English concepts into practical real-word art exercises.
By integrating current lessons that the other teachers are using at the school, Mrs. Rough is able to extend their learning experiences in these core subjects into creative outlets such as visual arts.
Mrs. Bridget Rough teaches 3rd grade and middle school Art at AMS Desert Sky in Phoenix, Arizona.
