Setting the benchmarks for students’ success at the Academies of Math & Science and i-Ready

Every student learns differently, therefore, every student cannot be expected to perform at the same level.


At AMS, we recognize that students can be at different levels in performance either above, below, or at grade level and that we, as educators, are meeting or students’ needs using the i-Ready online assessment tool. This ensures that we are meeting the needs of our students by providing tailored customized lessons for the students and their ability level.

“Here at AMS Flower we want to make sure that our families know that their students are receiving customized high-quality construction.


We understand that every child learns differently we want to make sure that we’re meeting every student’s needs we want to make sure that we’re putting the supports in place to help our students grow.


Growth is of the up most important for all our students because we want to see the strides made. When we think about the tools that we use whether it’s daily lessons or the i-Ready, we want to make sure that students are receiving instruction that is responsive to their needs that they feel included in every aspect of a lesson and that their needs are being met towards reaching their academic growth goals.


iReady is an online-based platform in which students take a diagnostic and then they are leveled based off their cognitive ability. Then, students are placed either on green level, above grade level, or below grade level based off the assessment results.


The subsequent lessons are planned afterwards using the iReady platform. Then students take those lessons on a daily and weekly basis and then that goes towards the next benchmark assessment. Then the next benchmark assessment assesses whether students are still on grade level, below grade level, or if indeed they’ve achieved above grade level.

Even before the pandemic, we recognized that students were at different levels in performance. Weather a student was performing below grade level, on great level or above grade level, we all needed to make sure as educators, we were meeting or students’ needs using the i-Ready online assessment tool and the subsequent lessons thereafter, ensures that we are meeting the needs of our students by providing tailored customized lessons for the students and their ability level.


This year at AMS Flower our students have shown tremendous growth across one semester already with i-Ready both in mathematics and English language arts. We have seen growth of over 100%. How it that possible?  I’ll tell you how, it’s the committed excellence of our teachers day-in and day-out planting those high-quality lessons for students.”

“What’s incredible about AMS is its desire to constantly grow. There is never a point in time where AMS is content with where it’s at. There’s always a goal and always something to strive towards and that is a team I want to be a part of.


My name is Curtis Walker, and I am the Principal of Academy of Math and Science Flower.

Six years ago, I began my career with AMS as a teacher. I was a middle school language arts teacher and I transition from middle school language arts to an Assistant Principal position with the Camelback campus. Three years ago, was asked to become Principal and serve the community at AMS Flower and so three years ago I became the Principal at the Academy of Math and Science.


What makes AMS Flower so special and different from any other school is our sense of community. Here at AMS Flower we celebrate one another, we have a growth mindset, we look out for each other every single day and that is something that you do not find anywhere else.


Each and every day our teachers come to work, and they are happy to be here. That is something that you don’t find often when you’re talking about schools and education, especially in the midst of pandemic. And so our teachers come ready every day, happy and ready to work for our kids and ready to serve our community.


From front office, to facilities, to our paraprofessionals, to our teachers; there is a sense of collaboration, there’s a sense of community and we have each other’s backs.


Every minute matters. Every minute of instruction matters and every minute of building and fostering relationships matter here at AMS Flower. Our kids need us just as much as we need them. Our kids are special there is so much hope so much potential so much that we are looking forward to seeing all of her students on a daily basis.

Our students start with us beginning in kindergarten and they matriculate all the way through to 8th grade and that is something special within itself. What happens within those years is all on our teachers. Our teachers work their hardest every single day and commit themselves to planning lessons on a daily basis, ensuring that our students receive the highest quality of Education possible.  

Along the way, there’s the integration of Technology and making sure that celebrations are happening along the way. Our teachers want to make sure that our students have every opportunity afforded to them outside of AMS Flower.”
